Republicans and Democrats view not just the opposing party but also the people in that party in a negative light, according to a Pew Research poll published last month. Majorities of Democrats say Republicans are closed-minded (83%), unintelligent (52%), immoral (63%), or dishonest (64%). Likewise, majorities of Republicans say Democrats are closed-minded (69%), unintelligent (51%), immoral (72%), or dishonest (72%). Majorities of both Republicans (63%) and Democrats (51%) each say the members of their own party are more moral than other Americans.
Interestingly, the same poll conducted in 2016 showed that majorities did not think the people in the other party were unintelligent, immoral, or dishonest. Closed-mindedness was the only trait seen by a majority of both parties but at a lower percent than in 2022.
It seems like our country has forgotten that we are Americans first - with many things in common (that we have documented) - and Republicans or Democrats second. Help to reverse this trend and heal these divisions in our country by making a Promise to be Purple.
