A significant majority of Americans regardless of political party support U.S. Congress passing a law to protect interracial marriage, according to a recent Politico/Morning Consult poll. Such a law is supported by 71% of registered voters, including 56% of Republicans, 83% of Democrats, and 74% of independents. This support is lower than the 94% of Americans who approve of interracial marriage itself, according to a 2021 Gallup poll.
Interracial marriage is currently protected by the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court decision. Protection for interracial marriage in one component of the Respect for Marriage Act that was passed by the House of Representatives on July 19 but has not yet been taken up by the Senate.
